Gospel Reading:
When Jesus had washed the disciples’ feet, he said to them:
“Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master
nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him.
If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it.
I am not speaking of all of you.
I know those whom I have chosen.
But so that the Scripture might be fulfilled,
The one who ate my food has raised his heel against me.
From now on I am telling you before it happens,
so that when it happens you may believe that I AM.
Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send
receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”
Reflection:
I will sing forever of your love.
The psalmist sings of God’s faithful love forever, of our God who does not violate the covenant nor withdraw the word once spoken. Yet the psalmist also says that the servant David has had all his defences pierced and his strongholds lay in ruins by this God, who now remains hidden. What now of those pledges by God of faithful love? It can certainly feel like God is in hiding sometimes while our strongholds lie in ruins. So much is beyond our control yet we try to dominate, to bargain, to label. We resist weakness and failure, yet they creep in unbidden. To let go of our preconceptions and to see God in our ruins is an almost impossible ask sometimes, yet that is the invitation of the psalmist: to seek out God’s faithfulness in our lives so we too can sing of God’s faithful love forever, even when it may not meet our expectations.
